British Open Pub in Scottsdale, AZ Offers Fine Eats and Drinks – Good Prices Too!

So I find myself on the brink of being very hungry and fathoming what a nice Spiddick’s beer would go down with—a very dark English lager—when I happen upon the British Open Pub in Scottsdale, Arizona, located in the Papago Plaza on the southwest corner of Scottsdale Road and McDowell in South Scottsdale. The date was January 5th, of this year (2009) and I was waiting to rendezvous with my older brother to attend the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona—where the number three ranked Texas Texans were sparring off against the number ten Ohio Buckeyes. Of course, everybody knows that stadium beer sucks and that the food also sucks, and of course, that you will pay handsomely for such sucking. So, my brother, my sister, and her boyfriend, the quad of us, decided to get handsomely full and quite buzzed prior to the event at this tucked away pub in Scottsdale.

One of the only Decent Pubs in Town
I was surprised to find, upon entering the darkened interior of this mahogany complimented British Pub, that it was quite nice and welcoming inside. The bar in the main room lines the entire area and offers ample seating for plenty. There are other scattered tables about the pub, a billiards table and a few video games in the back. Surprisingly the bathrooms were also clean and smelled good, a rarity in any bar, much less a pub. I was quite shocked at how this tucked away pub was so comfortable inside and they had a divers beer selection with many rare beers on tap, and all offered at bargain prices during ‘Happy Hour.’

A Diverse Food Menu Compliments Their Drink Selection
The food menu is several pages and offers everything from British favorites like Cronies and Fish and Chips to solid Prime Rib Sandwiches and burgers. I had the prime rib sandwich, served on thick English bread with mild white horseradish dressing and cheese and it was the best prime rib sandwich I have ever had. Washed down with a few cold beers and a side of coleslaw, I was in taste bud heaven. My brother joined us a short while later and dined on the same fare as me—we both agreed we had never had a better sandwich; and the fries were great as well!

Rating: **** Four Stars: for feeling and interior ambiance, cleanliness, customer service, amazing beer selection, amazing menu with awesome eats, location, prices, and of course, for being pretty much the only decent British Pub in town; they also show all of the soccer games, which is a big attraction to their pub.

My Opinion: In my humble opinion, you will be hard pressed to find a better joint in town that offers more food at better prices, and who could find more beer selections on tap. The service was great, the interior was fun and the sandwich was one of the best I have ever had. Needless to say I will definitely be going back to the British Open to whet my palate in the future.
