  • ‘Shame On You’ Pub Offers Authentic Cajun Grill, Good Drinks Too

    Add Comment

On the prowl for a spicy fare, I find myself walking into a smaller bar and pub that specializes in Cajun food, appropriately named, Shame On You. Not expecting anything special in particular, after delving into their famous chicken and sausage gumbo, I am quickly converted to their southern flare. Namely, their food speaks for itself, and offers a different taste that is hard to find in Arizona. If you love Cajun food…this place definitely has been calling your name.

After a rather long day of recording at the recording studio that I own in Tempe, Arizona, I find that I have worked up quite a hunger. With my wife in hand, we head to Tempe Marketplace, a large outdoor shopping mall located off Rio Salado Parkway and Smith Road in downtown Tempe. While this place offers numerous great restaurants, we find ourselves parking and walking into Ruby Tuesday. To be honest, I was not expecting all that much.

I find myself once again headed to another great little place to eat while out running my daily errands. This time, it’s the Tilted Kilt in Mesa, AZ. While I was not expecting all that much before eating there, what I got was a pleasant surprise that will keep me coming back to this place for years to come.

    The Food
This place is better known by the locals who frequent it as a pub and an eatery. Their menu was recently redone and features booklet like menus that have glossy pages and are really nice. They offer nearly fifty different things that you can eat, from building your own custom wood fire pizzas, to hoagies, sandwiches and even steaks. When I was there, I ate the Fat Bastard’s Meat Loaf Sandwich. A decadent trim of home made meatloaf on a hoagie bun with Guinness BBQ sauce and provolone cheese. It was actually the best damn meatloaf I have ever had, and they make everything from scratch here.

Where did you go to eat on Memorial Day? As we drove down to Oakland, California, we passed by people picnicking on the beach, families grilling in the park, even some roller bladers gulping down a smoothie.

Yes, people are still roller blading. I know, I was surprised too.

  • Boundary Bay Brewery And Bistro: Bellingham, WA

Although it's best known for its amazing microbrew beers, Boundary Bay is a super place to have reliably good food; they really mean it when they say "Be Local, Eat Local." They use local produce, milk and cheese, as well as oysters, salmon, and locally made artisan bread. It was the first local restaurant we tried, and well, we've not tried as many others as we might because we keep going back; the food is that good, and the people that nice. Plus, the beer is great.

I'm not one to drink without at least something to nibble, and the Hummus Plate is a favorite. It includes hummus, tzatziki, cucumber slices, incredibly sweet fresh grape tomatoes, sprouts, and warm pita bread. It's large enough to comfortably share over a couple of pints of beer.
