I have a friend who used to make a 40 minute drive just to get a Jimmy John's sub every couple of weeks. I love subs just as much as the next person, but they never been one of my "to die for" favorite restaurant foods. I have actually started eating subs less and less since the most popular sub chain in America, Subway, has been getting stingier and stingier when making their subs around where I live. The last time I came home from Subway I had a foot-long piece of bread with two slices of turkey on it and one slice of tomato. Of course, I am exaggerating a bit, but that is what it felt like I was eating. Anyways, back to Jimmy John's subs. Imagine my friend's delight when they opened a brand-new shop just minutes from both of our houses. He talked me into trying one of their subs (it didn't take much), and this is what I thought.
I ordered the #12 Giant Club Sandwich called the "Beach Club." It is an 8" sub on homemade French bread containing turkey breast, provolone cheese, avocado spread, sliced cucumber, sprouts, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. I have to say, it was pretty delicious. There was a good amount of meat and cheese on it. The one thing they were extremely stingy with was the avocado spread; there was one tiny glob of it in one spot on the sub. Other than that, it was a good sub and I have to say that I have eaten several since. I now add onions, which is a free extra, and I like the sub even better. Priced at $5.65, it is also a decent deal. It is 65 cents more than a Subway foot-long, but with twice the meat and cheese, it is much more filling and a better value.
My friend loves the #10 Giant Club Sandwich called the "Hunter's Club." This sub has a quarter-pound of medium-rare roast beef on it, along with provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. He swears that this is the best roast beef sub/sandwich he has had in his life. We decided that it is probably because most other roast beef sandwiches are made with roast beef that is more well done. Jimmy John's uses medium-rare beef and he says it makes a huge difference in taste.
I should note that these sandwiches are called "Giant Club Sandwiches" because they are also available on seven-grain bread in the form of a club sandwich. They also have smaller subs for $4.65, which I have yet to try, and many other varieties of subs. Give one of their subs a try, and let me know what you think!
